Artist Statement
Working as a children’s illustrator comes more easily to me because I am myself a child. I’ve always found myself in a perpetual state of feeling young. Though I also enjoy more serious and commercial forms of illustration, I believe I’ve always been a children’s illustrator.

My medium of choice is Sculpey, specifically the first two generations. I like the ability to hold my art in my hands, different from anything done digitally or with flat media. It strikes me as ironic, because my second favorite medium is digital. I know that my work turns out well when I hate it before bed, but then love it in the morning. I’m always apathetic when I finish a piece, but when it is done well I feel a sense of accomplishment to see it in the morning light.

I never planned on becoming a children’s illustrator. In fact, my plan was to leave college and immediately create an amazing comic book series, which would then be taken up by a Hollywood studio and made into a box office hit (directed by Joss Whedon). But during the course of my studies, that golden plan changed and it almost certainly changed because of Sculpey. My goal now is to keep exploring this new three-dimensional world I’ve opened up myself into, continually seeking to learn through experimentation.
